False Flag

Lately I’ve started to become interested in some of those 911 conspiracy theories rattling around the internet. The web site loosechange911.com is an especially interesting repository of paranoia. Like Fox News, I report, you decide:

March 13, 1962: Lyman Lemnitzer, chairman of the joint chiefs presents a proposal for a so-called “false flag” operation to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. The proposal includes a plan to create a fictitious terrorist attack in and around Guantanamo Bay such that the action would appear to have been done by Cuban forces, thus giving justification for the Unites States to invade Cuba. I have read the un-classified report (available at loosechange's web site) and some of the suggestions for the types of attack are pretty off the wall. They include lobbing mortar shells and napalm into Guantanamo from the outside and blowing up an American ship in Guantanamo Harbor. This operation the report describes as a “Remember the Maine” incident. The military also considered “developing a communist Cuban terrorist campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities, even in Washington”. (Emphasis added). As part of this manufactured campaign the government considered setting off a number of bombs in American cities. The use of airplanes was also considered, including destroying an airliner and blaming the Cuban government. Read the report, it will freak you out.

December 1984: NASA flies and deliberate crashes a Boeing 720 by remote control while conducting fuel research.

September 2000: A report by “Project for New American Century” a conservative neo-con think tank authored in part by Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfiwitz entitled “Rebuilding America’a Defenses notes that “the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor.” (Page 50-51)

Octobor 2000: The Pentagon conducts two days of tests simulating what would happen if a Boeing 757 crashed into the Pentagon. (Project MASCAL). Participating in these exercises was Charles Burlingame, an ex-Navy f4 pilot who worked at the Pentagon. He retired from the service shortly thereafter and took a job with American Airlines where he enjoyed working as a commercial pilot until the Boeing 757 he was commanding on September 11, 2001, crashed into the Pentagon.

September 10, 2001: San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown receives a phone call warning him not to fly the next morning. Pacifica Radio later reveals that this phone call came directly from National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice
There is more along these lines. The strange movements of American Airlines and United Airlines stock the day before 911, the fact that most of the fighter jets assigned to protect the United States were called away on training missions. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Having seen one of the american airlines planes fly virtually over my head a minute or two before it hit the north tower, the smoke billowing from the building seconds later, and having felt the explosion caused by the second plane hitting the south tower, although I was about three miles away, it is deeply disturbing to me that you or anyone else takes this stuff seriously. The build up to the attack has been thoroughly documented on an excellent CNN documentary, and in other places. Part of that story is that there were some warnings about an imminent attack that were ignored by authorities who could have prevented them. If the kind of stringent airport security that went into effect after 9/11 was put into effect a month before - when these warnings were starting to be clearly heard - the 9/11 attack probably could have been prevented. But this is different from saying that the attack was encouraged by the administration because of some kind of nefarious plan. What happened on 9/11 is oh so different from staging a little skirmish on the edge of a military base in Cuba in the early sixties - and that never happened. If I remember my history lessonscorrectly, the spanish american war in 1898, which briefly made Cuba a U S colony, and got us the Guantanamo base in the first place, started with an incident that was engineered by the United States, and made to look like an act of aggression. All of us, including you and me, have probably sat around dreaming up 'what if' scenarios - what if we killed 60,000 people (Giuliani's originial, and far from implausible estimate of the casualties of 9/11, based on the usual population of the towers on a normal work day) in blue-state lower Manhattan (most of them not Bush voters anyway!) so we could start a war in the middle east?? I don't like this administration, but come now.

While admitting that the US Government has, several times in the past, manufactured tragic events as pretexts to draw the country into war, for some reason you dismiss out of hand the possibility that it occurred in this instance. This is a logically inconsistent position and frankly somewhat indefensible. No one is denying that a plane flew into the World Trade Center on 911. I was actually coming out of the office at 100 Church Street when the second plane hit and I saw a chunk of engine land about 20 yards away from where I was standing. However, after reviewing a considerable amount of evidence I am forced by the facts to conclude that a plane by itself could not have caused the implosion of those buildings. Remember, no plane ever struck WTC7 yet it also imploded in a neat pile several hours later (Along with thousands of files relating to the investigation of various Wall Street companies for criminal trading violations). I was standing at the intersection of Church Street and Chambers when the first tower was imploded. My initial thought, before any of this conspiracy stuff started going around was that terrorists had planted additional bombs in the towers. I saw the puffs of smoke coming from a number of floors below where the planes landed and I actually heard what sounded to my admittedly untrained ears like explosions. I’m not saying I believe in all this stuff whole cloth but I am seriously considering the possibility that this was, indeed, a false flag operation.

I'm certainly perpared to believe it. You see, the thing is, it is impossible to believe a word this government says.

Just to follow up on my last comment, look at how the administration lied about the air quality in the days immediately following 9/11. I remember seeing Christie Whitman on TV telling us that the air was safe and thinking that it couldn't possibly be true. After all, where I was, in Brooklyn Heights, across the East River from lower Manhattan, the air stank and the streets were covered with ash. The government lied directly to our faces and now many of the people who responded to Ground Zero are sick, will become sicker, and probably die earlier because of this administration's malfeasance. If they were willing to do that, what won't they do?

Agreed. This is, after all, the same administration that has sought to legitimize torture as a means of extracting information. It is the same administration that has no problem spying on its own citizens and holding people in indefinite detention without judicial review. These guys are total wing-nuts. Even the Reagan administration used to refer to Rumsfeld, Cheney and their neo-con pals as “the crazies”.
